Evacuated to my brother's house in Houston after Katrina, I noticed how clean he kept his bike chain. The secret was "Purple Extreme" lube from bike shops at $10/4 oz. I found you can buy the exact same stuff called Royal Purple Max-Chain Chain Lubricant in a spray can for $12.95/11 oz.
I de-greased my bicycle and applied it to the chain, freewheel, and derailleurs with the thin extender tube. The first thing I noticed was the quiet operation; not the usual clanking and rattle. Wow! Looking down, I see only shiny aluminum and my gold Oro freewheel instead of the black gunk. Of course there are still a few black spots, but another de-greasing and some simichrome polishing should take care of that. This is a "thixotrophic lubricant" made of Calcium Carbonate and Calcium Sulfate. It soaks into metal and dries leaving a lubricating film which does not attract dust. BREAKTHROUGH!! A revolutionary wave has passed over us. Say good-by to dirty chains; black marked socks, greasy hands, black marked carpets, and ruined jerseys. You can now have a clean, dry, well lubricated, and quiet chain! After 50 years of suffering with black grease ruining white socks and dirty fingernails, a greaseless bike is a paradigm shift.
