Explanation from TD Ameritrade:

Can I import my 2010 TD Ameritrade tax data into tax preparation software?

Yes. The three most widely used providers of tax software are TurboTax, H&R Block, and Tax Act. Installed and online versions are offered. An installed version is a program installed on and run from your computer. An online version is accessed from the provider Web site.

Some versions of tax software do not fully support importing certain types of data. This decision is made by the tax software provider. The Section 1256 contract activity, for example, if noted in the summary of the GainsKeeper® Realized Gain/Loss Report, is not included in any import data and must be entered manually.

These steps pertain to the current tax year. If you are preparing your return for a previous tax year, these steps will differ because tax law changes each year.

TD Ameritrade does not provide tax advice and cannot be responsible for errors in reporting data to any third party system or the tax advice rendered by the third party.

Generally:

TurboTax installed and online versions import both Buy/Sell and Dividend/Interest information. The Premier version and higher calculate wash-sale adjustments. The installed version is recommended by our partner GainsKeeper.

H&R Block installed versions import Buy/Sell information only. H&R Block Online does not allow the import of any TD Ameritrade data. Early in 2010 we requested H&R Block to allow TD Ameritrade data import. The ability to import data for 2010 is yet to be determined.

Tax Act (Installed) imports Buy/Sell information only.

* The numbers don’t match

The total displayed on the Schedule D-1 does not agree with that listed on the GainsKeeper Realized Sell Activity report summary. This is by design. The total displayed on the Schedule D-1 in Turbo Tax is prior to any calculations being performed.

Check the Net short-term capital gain or (loss) in Line 7 of the Schedule D. This number should agree with the GainsKeeper Realized Sell Activity report summary. If these do not match for any reason, remove the imported data:

* (Installed version) File > Remove Imported Data
* (Online version) Federal Taxes > Explore On My Own > Update (in Easy Import section at the top of page)

Then re-import the data and match the summary numbers on the Realized Gain/Loss report to the Schedule D:

* Line 16 - Net Short and Long Term Gain(Loss)
* Line 15 - Net Long Term Gain(Loss)
* Line 7 - Net Short Term Gain(Loss)
