The German church service under Pastor Neumann continues. But, the German Seamens' Mission in New Orleans has closed.
For the last 40 years, the Mission served many functions to the German speaking residents of the Gulf Coast. Pastor Neumann, while retired and working without pay, worked endlessly to serve the maritime community. He conducts monthly church service in the German language and ministers to the community of German and U.S. citizens. He visited ships in the port daily to minister and helped seamen of all nationalities and faiths with social services, transportation to shopping and medical help, exchanges films and video tapes, transfers funds, and many other services. He advised port authorities and served on many maritime committees. The Mission building served as a library, media and communications center, and overnight accommodiations for seamen in need.
The German Seamen's Mission maintains forty-one stations in Germany and around the world. Seventy-two full-time staff and many volunteers are engaged in our missionary work. The Church in Germany makes a great effort to finance our work. In addition they receive financial help from federal resources, shipping companies, and unions, and gifts from those interested in the work. The Church is moved by the Love of God and speaks of it. The Seamen's Mission is the voice of the Church in the seafaring world. The German Seamen's Mission attempts in word and deed to bring the message of God's Love to seafarers and their families.
The German Seamen's Mission, with headquarters in Bremen, Germany, has been suffering a big reduction in financial support because there are few German citizens on ships in the last years; even German registered ships. The government has ended financial contributions. Therefore, Bremen will cease to support the New Orleans office at the end of 2010 and begin the process of selling the mission building. However, GSM-NOLA continues except that Pastor Neumann will visit fewer ships. The church service continues and the mission building will continue to be used until the sale. At that time, the mission building will continue at another location.
